When you record a Voice Memo on your iPhone, it saves as M4A with AAC-LC encoding. When Voice Memos compresses to save space, it switches to HE-AAC — better compression, smaller files, but more aggressive frequency cutting. Apple's ALAC lossless codec also uses the M4A container, meaning some M4A files are actually lossless. And then there's M4B (audiobooks with chapter markers) and M4P (old DRM-protected iTunes tracks). Vocova handles all of these variants correctly.

Some M4A files contain ALAC (Apple Lossless Audio Codec) instead of AAC — lossless quality in the same container format. We detect ALAC automatically and process it as lossless, giving you the same accuracy advantage as WAV without needing to convert.
Modern iPhones apply computational audio processing: noise cancellation, wind reduction, and voice isolation. These features can introduce subtle artifacts — spectral holes where noise was removed, or slight smearing of consonants. Our model is trained on iPhone-processed audio and handles these artifacts correctly.

In compressed mode, Voice Memos uses HE-AAC, which adds Spectral Band Replication to reconstruct high frequencies from even less data. The result is intelligible speech at very low bitrates — though the reconstructed frequencies are synthetic approximations, not the original audio.
All three use the same MPEG-4 container. M4A is standard audio (AAC or ALAC). M4B is audiobooks — same audio with added chapter markers and bookmarking support. M4P was Apple's old DRM-protected format from the iTunes FairPlay era. We can transcribe M4A and M4B files. M4P files with active DRM cannot be processed.
Yes. M4A files containing ALAC (Apple Lossless Audio Codec) are fully lossless — identical quality to WAV but roughly 60% of the file size. We detect ALAC automatically and process it as lossless. You can check if your M4A is ALAC by looking at the file info in Finder or iTunes: if it shows 'Apple Lossless' as the codec, it's lossless.

However, aggressive noise cancellation can occasionally create artifacts — brief spectral holes or slightly muffled consonants. Our model is trained on iPhone-processed audio and handles these artifacts well.
For transcription, Compressed (the default) works well for clear speech in quiet environments. Use Lossless if you're recording in a noisy environment, recording speech with heavy accents, or if accuracy is critical — the extra audio detail helps in challenging conditions. The file size difference is significant: a one-hour Compressed recording might be 30 MB, while Lossless could be 300 MB.
Yes. WhatsApp and Telegram voice messages are saved as M4A (or OGG Opus, which we also support). If you can export the voice message file from the app, you can upload it directly for transcription.
