Transcribe M4A audio from Voice Memos and iPhone recordings

M4A is what your iPhone and Mac actually save when you hit record. We handle the full range — AAC-LC Voice Memos, HE-AAC at tiny file sizes, and even ALAC lossless recordings inside M4A containers.

M4A: the Apple audio format most people don't realize they're using

When you record a Voice Memo on your iPhone, it saves as M4A with AAC-LC encoding. When Voice Memos compresses to save space, it switches to HE-AAC — better compression, smaller files, but more aggressive frequency cutting. Apple's ALAC lossless codec also uses the M4A container, meaning some M4A files are actually lossless. And then there's M4B (audiobooks with chapter markers) and M4P (old DRM-protected iTunes tracks). Vocova handles all of these variants correctly.

Come funziona

1

Carica il tuo file M4A

Drag and drop any M4A file — from Voice Memos, iPhone recordings, iTunes rips, or any other source. We detect the internal codec automatically.

  • AAC-LC, HE-AAC, and HE-AACv2 all supported
  • ALAC lossless M4A files handled natively
  • Files up to 500 MB — many hours of AAC audio
2

Codec detection and transcription

We read the M4A container to identify the audio codec (AAC-LC, HE-AAC, or ALAC), decode it appropriately, and run speech recognition optimized for that codec's characteristics.

  • Automatic codec detection from M4A metadata
  • 100+ languages with automatic detection
  • Speaker diarization for multi-voice recordings
3

Review and export

Edit the transcript in the browser, then export as plain text, subtitles, or documents with timestamps synced to your recording.

  • Esporta come TXT, SRT, VTT, DOCX o PDF
  • Timestamps synced to original recording
  • Speaker labels for conversations

Funzionalità

AAC-LC and HE-AAC handling

Voice Memos uses AAC-LC for normal quality and HE-AAC for compressed recordings. HE-AAC uses Spectral Band Replication to reconstruct high frequencies from a lower bitrate — it sounds clear at tiny file sizes but the reconstructed frequencies are synthetic. Our speech model knows the difference and doesn't rely on SBR-reconstructed frequencies.

ALAC lossless support

Some M4A files contain ALAC (Apple Lossless Audio Codec) instead of AAC — lossless quality in the same container format. We detect ALAC automatically and process it as lossless, giving you the same accuracy advantage as WAV without needing to convert.

iPhone noise cancellation awareness

Modern iPhones apply computational audio processing: noise cancellation, wind reduction, and voice isolation. These features can introduce subtle artifacts — spectral holes where noise was removed, or slight smearing of consonants. Our model is trained on iPhone-processed audio and handles these artifacts correctly.

Voice Memos variable quality

Voice Memos lets users choose between Compressed and Lossless quality. Compressed mode uses lower-bitrate AAC that works well for casual notes but degrades with background noise. We optimize processing for both quality levels, extracting maximum accuracy regardless of the recording setting.

Perché scegliere Vocova

Transcribe Voice Memos without format gymnastics

Voice Memos saves as M4A. AirDrop it to your Mac, share it via iCloud, or upload directly from your iPhone browser. No need to convert to MP3 or WAV — the M4A file works as-is.

Process iPhone meeting and lecture recordings

Students and professionals recording with their iPhone get M4A files. These recordings benefit from iPhone's noise cancellation hardware, producing cleaner audio that transcribes well even in noisy environments.

Convert voice notes into organized text

Capture ideas, to-do items, and thoughts as Voice Memos throughout the day, then batch-transcribe them into organized text. Searching through text is faster than replaying dozens of short recordings.

Extract text from audiobook clips

Apple Books and iTunes audiobooks use M4A (sometimes labeled M4B with chapter markers). Extract specific passages as text for notes, citations, or research references.

Chi può trarne vantaggio

iPhone users recording Voice Memos

Turn everyday voice recordings — meeting notes, reminders, interviews, lecture captures — into text without converting formats or using a computer. Upload the M4A directly.

Journalists recording on iPhones

iPhones are the most common recording device for field journalism. Transcribe M4A interview recordings with speaker labels for articles, even from recordings made in noisy environments.

Students capturing lectures

Record lectures with your iPhone's Voice Memos app and convert them to searchable study notes. iPhone's noise cancellation helps with large lecture halls.

Apple ecosystem professionals

If your workflow is built on Mac, iPhone, and iPad, your recordings are M4A. Transcribe without leaving the Apple ecosystem — no need to export to other formats.
